According to Blaise Pascal, the famous mathematician, “chess is the gymnasium of the mind.” If that's true, then the Janitell Chess Club has some of the best athletes around. Led by Mr. Homberger, Janitell's excellent chess coach and teacher, the Jaguars swept a number of prizes in the Widefield Tournament last week. Kyle L., Jayden G., Keegan S., and Justice B. all scored first or second place medals. There are many reasons teens should play chess, so it's good to see so many Jaguars expanding their minds with the game and achieving success. Congratulations Mr. Homberger and the Chess Club. You are literally the best!
And here is Mr. Homberger's report: "The sun had yet to rise on an early snowy morning on January 23rd as the Janitell Chess Team began to compete against Grand Mountain, Sproul, and Watson at S. A. Wilson auditorium. The competition was intense as the competitors battled for supremacy at their designated tables. In the end after a four year drought, Janitell emerged victorious! Every Janitell competitor contributed to the victory. Kyle L., Justice B., and Keegan S. took first place at their respective tables. Jayden G. took second place at his table, and Mike L. and Tyler L. were honorable mentions at their tables. Coach Homberger was delighted to bring home the 1st Place plaque. The competitors have worked very hard this year to accomplish this victory."
