On May 13th, a group of 8th grade girls from Janitell went on a special field trip for Law Day, a national event that celebrates the legal system and the people who work in it. The trip was organized by the Colorado Women’s Bar Association and gave students the chance to visit the El Paso County Courthouse.
During the visit, students watched real courtroom action, including trials, sentencing, and closing arguments. They even got to see the holding cells where prisoners are kept. The students met with three women judges and magistrates, who talked about their jobs in criminal, family, and juvenile law.
The day ended with a question and answer session, where the students got to ask the judges about their work. Ms. Cook, one of Janitell’s Social Studies teachers, said it was “an amazing experience for all.” The field trip gave students a better understanding of how the legal system works and how women are making a big difference in the courtroom.
